A new fan trailer imagines The Batman in the DCEU starring Ben Affleck. Debuting as the new Bruce Wayne in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the actor reprised the role in a Suicide Squad cameo and one more time in 2017’s Justice League. He was also supposed to star and direct his own solo movie that exists in the same universe, but that obviously isn’t the case anymore after officially leaving his post early this year.
Rumors that Affleck was actively looking a way out of his Warner Bros. and DC gig began shortly after his first outing as Batman in BvS. That’s despite the fact that his performance was hailed to be the best from the film - a surprise considering the backlash his casting initially got. However, the divisive reception to the movie seemed to have simply turned him off from the role. So while he still put on the cape and cowl a year later in Justice League, it was an open secret that he’s leaving the stint, opening the role for a new actor. Now, it’s Robert Pattison’s time as the famed Caped Crusader set to debut in Matt Reeves’ project. He is going to be joined by Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman. But some are still pondering on the idea that Affleck’s version will continue as evidenced in this new fan-created trailer.
Courtesy of Billy Crammer is a mock-up trailer for The Batman starring Affleck. The clip runs for a little bit over two minutes and is a mix of footage fans have already seen in DCEU movies like the interactions between Wayne and Jeremy Irons’ Alfred Pennyworth, as well Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. That means, it includes Jared Leto’s Joker, Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke and Aaron Eckhart’s Two-Face. Watch the video shared on the creator’s Youtube channel below:
Since it wasn’t that long after he debuted when rumors started swirling that Affleck wants out of the Batman role, it’s unclear how far along he was in planning the first version of The Batman. According to cinematographer Robert Richardson who was supposed to work on the movie, there was a script but the story wasn’t well-received internally. Affleck was on the process of changing it to focus more on the psychological aspect of the Caped Crusader, somewhat similar to Arkham Asylum.
Chances are the fan-created video is quite far from what Affleck’s The Batman would’ve looked like. That being said, the thought of seeing him square off the previously-introduced bad guys in the DCEU is something that fans would’ve loved to see. Regardless of what came out of his casting, seeing a battered and hardened Batman during the twilight years of his tenure was an interesting take on the character who has always been depicted to be at his prime.
